Minerals - Why are they important?

A balanced diet normally supplies sufficient vitamins and minerals. However, serious disorders can still develop if your diet doesn’t meet your body's needs. If you constantly feel sluggish or suffer from chronic health problems, you might not be getting all the vitamins or minerals your body requires. Doctors usually prescribe vitamin supplements to remedy vitamin and mineral deficiencies in the body. Do you still need to take vitamins and minerals even if you eat a healthy diet? Yes. Eating vitamin-rich foods should be supported by the right vitamin and mineral supplements. Vitamins and minerals serve as buffers in the event that your diet does not meet your daily requirements fully.

Many of us have taken vitamins and minerals all our lives, but neglect the very nutrients that help vitamins work most effectively - minerals. Minerals are vital for every cellular and chemical reaction throughout the human body. Since we can’t make minerals ourselves (they’re not naturally produced in the human body), we must obtain them by eating mineral-rich foods. The truth is we don't actually get optimal amounts of minerals from our diet alone.

Minerals help maintain healthy brain function, support strong bones and teeth, strengthen your immune system and keep your cardiovascular system working properly. Throughout the body, minerals form critical structural elements, control the action of nerves and muscles, help maintain the body's water balance, and buffer the pH (acidity) of the cell and extracellular fluids. Although minerals only make up about 5% of body weight, life would be impossible without them. There are 22 minerals identified as necessary for healthy, normal physiological activity. These essential minerals are categorized as major minerals (those needed in the largest quantities like calcium and magnesium) or trace minerals (those needed in smaller quantities like copper and selenium). Each has unique physiological roles as well as digestive, absorptive, interactive and metabolic characteristics.

Our bodies need certain minerals at high levels, including calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium. These minerals, because they are needed by our bodies in significant amounts, are called macrominerals. A number of other minerals, required in much smaller levels by our bodies, but no less important to good overall health, are called microminerals, or more commonly trace minerals. Trace minerals are usually found at very small levels in our bodies in the parts per million range. In spite of the relatively low concentrations of these minerals, scientists are discovering that they play an increasingly vital role in our health, including the health of our bones and joints.

A large number of trace minerals are directly linked to good bone health. Deficiencies of certain trace minerals, such as copper and manganese, for example, have been connected to lower bone density and weaker bones. While everyone is aware of the benefit calcium has on bone health, studies show that supplementing with calcium and trace minerals together increases bone density in post-menopausal women more than calcium alone—the lesson learned is calcium by itself is not enough!

While the mechanisms of how trace minerals function in our bodies may not be entirely known, it is becoming clear that they are necessary for preserving bone mass and for general health as well! There are 60 minerals found in human blood that are necessary in our diets on a regular basis. Breast milk also contains 60 minerals, including some such as nickel and vanadium that were previously thought to be unimportant. Because they’re found in our bodies’ most vital fluids, more research is being done into how great an importance they have on our overall health.
